The Loess Plateau, China’s third largest plateau with an area of around 600,000 square kilometers and an average elevation of 1,000 — 2,000 meters, is covered mostly by loess that is 50 — 80 meters thick, making it the region with the most concentrated and thickest loess in the world. It is a natural wonder found nowhere else on earth.
The Loess Plateau is one of the cradles of the Chinese nation. People started farming on it as early as 5,500 years ago. With the continuous development of agriculture, there was a growing population in this region, and it became the political and economic center of China as far back as the Qin and Han Dynasties. Nowadays, owing to the implementation of the Western Development Strategy, the economy of the Loess Plateau region has developed rapidly.
