Due Attention Should Be Given to the Study of Chinese

In recent years there has been a worrying phenomenon that many students learn foreign languages especially English with great zeal, on the contrary, they overlook the study of Chinese, leaving it in the cold.

One of the main reasons accounting for this phenomenon is that most students take it for granted that they’ ve already mastered Chinese for it is their mother tongue. Besides, Chinese seems to be of little help in job hunting so few universities and students put emphasis on it. Students’ weakness in Chinese would inevitably lead to their ignorance of Chinese culture.

This situation must be changed. First, it is necessary that we should not treat Chinese merely from a perspective of utility. Chinese, as our mother tongue and an indispensable part of our culture, should be given due atten-tion at any time. Second, colleges and universities should take measures to promote study and research of Chinese.
