The Importance of Writing Chinese Characters

Recently, it has been a common phenomenon that a number of people, especially youngsters, are accustomed to using electronic devices to type instead of writing Chinese characters. In their opinion, it’s convenient and time-saving to type. However, I believe we should not abandon Chinese handwriting.

First, writing Chinese characters is conducive to fostering good character traits because it can calm people down, thus leaving room for learning and thinking. In contrast, with smartphones or computers, only by typing in phonetic alphabets can people choose the correct characters, which in the long run will weaken their memory of Chinese characters. Second, Chinese characters are symbols of Chinese culture. By writing Chinese characters, one can experience the charm of Chinese culture and enhance cultural identity.

In conclusion, the lifelike Chinese characters are gradually being ignored because of over-reliance on the keyboards. It seems to be difficult for us to dismiss the easy way of typewriting in the information age, yet we shouldn’t forget the characters which have been passed down from thousands of years ago.
