Xu Xiake was a famous geographer in the Ming Dynasty of China. He spent over 30 years traveling throughout most of China, mainly on foot, and exploring many remote and desolate areas. He recorded his observations and research results in great detail, leaving valuable investigation materials for future generations. Through field investigations of many rivers, he corrected errors about their sources in the literature. In addition, he meticulously documented how topography, climate and other factors influenced plant growth, and vividly depicted the places of interest and local customs. His exploration records were compiled into the book Xu Xiake’s Travels by later generations, which had a profound influence at home and abroad.
