The Yellow River is the third longest river in Asia and the sixth longest river in the world. The Chinese character “黄” is used to describe its muddy water. The river originates from Qinghai Province, runs through nine provinces and eventually pours into the Bohai Sea. It is one of the several rivers which sustains China. The Yellow River basin is not only the birthplace of Chinese ancient civilization, but also the most prosperous region in the early history of China. The river, however, once caused numerous disasters as a result of the frequent happening of notoriously destructive floods. Over the past several decades, governments have taken a multitude of measures as a way to prevent calamities from happening.
