Whether university sports facilities should be available to the public or not has sparked controversy among faculty and students on our campus these days. In my opinion, while it may seem appealing to answer with “yes”, there are two main reasons why the issue should be carefully considered.

Firstly, the primary purpose of these facilities is to serve the students and staff at a university. Allowing public access can lead to overcrowding, making it difficult for students to utilize these resources effectively. This can harm their exercise experience and physical well-being, as they might have to wait longer or compete for access to equipment and spaces.

Secondly, opening university sports facilities to the public can cause the equipment and facilities to take much more wear and tear, resulting in higher maintenance costs. Universities, which often operate on tight budgets, might struggle to cover these additional expenses.

In conclusion, while sharing sports resources with the broader community is an admirable proposal, the potential downsides make it impractical and risky for universities to do so.
