Located in southwestern China, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is known as the Roof of the World, as it covers an area of around 2,300,000 square kilometers and stands at an average elevation of more than 4,000 meters. It boasts abundant natural resources, spectacular sceneries, and a variety of rare wild animals.
The temperature in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is extremely low, contributing to the formation of vast tracts of mountain glaciers. It is the birthplace of many famous rivers in Asia and the main source of freshwater supply in China and Southeast Asia. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is critical to the global ecosystem.
Affected by climate change, the glaciers on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are melting at an accelerating rate. China has been making great efforts to protect the ecosystem of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: grassland coverage has been increased and many endangered species have been better protected.
