Doing Good Deeds
Nowadays, different people hold different views about whether one should expect a reward when doing a good deed. Some people hold that a good deed should be given a certain reward. They say it complies with the rule of fairness. Also, rewards can stimulate people’s enthusiasm to do good deeds.
However, others take Lei Feng as a model and are always ready to help others without expecting any reward. Everyone may get into trouble. Only if you help others unselfishly can you get others’ help when you are in trouble. Besides, they insist that one can enjoy happiness in doing good deeds, which, they think, is the best return.
Weighing up these two arguments, I prefer the second one. First, being happy to help others is one of Chinese traditional virtues. Second, this virtue is of significance for building a harmonious society. To conclude, it is every citizen’s responsibility to do good deeds without expecting any reward.
