淋巴系统是人体内重要的防御功能系统，它遍布全身各处，由淋巴管（分为毛细淋巴管、淋巴管、淋巴干与淋巴导管），淋巴组织（分为弥散淋巴组织与淋巴小结），淋巴器官（如胸腺、骨髓、脾、扁桃体等）构成。
淋巴系统一方面引流淋巴液，清除机体内的异物、细菌等，另一方面淋巴系统是身体防御的前哨，分散于身体各部分淋巴结似一滤过装置，可有效阻止经淋巴管进入的微生物。
